Unofficial Backwards Compatibility: The Forbidden Games - Part II

Figured it's been a while since I did one of these,

Conker: Live & Reloaded, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Second Sight, Timesplitters: Future Perfect, Area 51 and Dead to Rights 2.

Sorry about the screen splitting in half, it's due to anti-piracy measures in the 360.

Good News Everyone

After the recent Summer 360 dashboard update there's a couple or three sweet backcompat related additions

* Battery Indicator added to Xbox Guide for wireless controllers
* Improved video playback for the following titles: Dead or Alive 3, Sonic Heroes, The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, XIII
* Xbox game downloadable content now shows up in the memory details which means you can now view or delete your Xbox saves/content
* Though they still haven't enabled the 360 to detect music and re-enable custom soundtracks in games it appears the latest update allows one to listen to their custom playlists in Xbox games....even those without custom soundtracks.

***Updated***

I have been in touch with the BC team. An fix to enable soundtrack control with Xbox games via the guide is planned and will be included in another update, unfortunatly re-enabling in-game soundacks -'ala Project Gotham Racing's radio- isn't going to happen.

How to:

Press 360 Guide button
Select Playlist
Start first track and let music play
Put in Xbox game and load
Voila

So far there are only 2 downsides

1) You can't skip or stop the music or change playlists because the guide still doesn't function with Xbox games, you can however use one of the media remotes to change tracks and pause the music
2) It will play over existing music. This may or may not be an issue depending on the game, but it's still pleasant for racing and sports games or titles where you can turn down the in game music

Quick Tips

Typically I see a lot of quick questions asked on many a forum so I figured we'd add a new section for quick reference

I can't load the maps for Halo 2

*
It's to do with cacheing resources on the Hard Drive.
*Be sure to download any Halo 2 auto-updates first or install the map pack before doing this.
*Load the Campaign, once the game starts, quit out. The maps should load then.

I can't play Halo 2 online due to a recurring message

So long as the game is on the backwards compatibility list; Yes.

Even cross console; Xbox to Xbox 360?

Yes again.

Do I need a crossover cable for LAN games?

What does it mean? What does it all mean?

Here's an interesting article about how Xbox 360 backwards compatibility is achieved

It's very complex and detailed, but very interesting to show the potential problems when attempting to emulate polar opposite hardware.

Unofficial Backwards Compatibility: The Forbidden Games

Fairly old, but not common knowledge.

Some months ago I stumbled upon the ability to boot some UK OXM demo discs on Xbox 360 and low and behold; some of them work and work damn well.

You can view the video here

Thanks to Xboxyde for hosting.

Apologies for the video quality, the bad interlacing is caused due to file compression. In reality the demos run and look as good as currently compatible titles.

Here's a list

Works

Cold War – Loaded title screen, but crashed when gameplay started
Conflict : Global Terror – Worked Flawlessly
Conflict :Vietnam - Couple of minor glitches, otherwise fine
Dead or Alive : Ultimate – Worked flawlessly
Dead to Rights 2 – FMV was choppy as hell, but game played perfectly
Def Jam: FFNY - Worked flawlessly
Destroy all Humans - Worked flawlessly
Evil Dead: Regeneration – Froze after 5 seconds of gameplay

Welcome to the party, pal!

Hello, good evening and welcome to Xbox Reloaded the 100% officially unofficial BackCompat blog for when 'The list' just ain't good enough.

The blog is something put together for a multitude of reasons

1) To compile an accurate list of backwards comptible Xbox titles with the Xbox 360 including any pitfalls and pleasures that come with.

2) The list will be forwarded to the Back Compat team at Microsoft to inform them of these issues and expodite fixes.

Perfecting emulators is a lot about trial and error, every time you fall flat on your face you're still moving forward and with every bug, glitch or performance issue you get one step closer to achieving 100% compatibility.
